Well water across much of Southeast Missouri is iron-rich, and no amount of <a href=\"\/concrete-cleaning\/\">concrete and driveway cleaning<\/a> pressure will move the stain it leaves. Chemistry will.<\/p>\n<h2>Where the rust comes from<\/h2>\n<p>Iron dissolved in well water is invisible until it oxidises. Every irrigation cycle deposits a little more onto the slab; over a season, the spray pattern of your sprinklers paints itself onto the driveway in orange.<\/p>\n<p>Fertiliser is the other common source \u2014 many lawn products contain iron, and granules that land on concrete and get wet leave a constellation of small round stains. Metal furniture, planters and tools left on the slab do the same in outline form.<\/p>\n<h2>Why pressure fails and acid works<\/h2>\n<p>Rust is not sitting on the concrete; it has precipitated into the pore structure. Pressure washing removes surface material and leaves the colour, often brighter than before because the grime around it is gone.<\/p>\n<p>Removal needs a chemical that converts the iron oxide into a soluble compound that rinses away \u2014 oxalic acid is the standard, applied, given dwell time, and rinsed. On most sprinkler staining the result is dramatic. Deep, old, repeatedly-recharged stains may need a second treatment, and honesty requires saying that some ghosting can remain on badly saturated slabs.<\/p>\n<h2>Keeping it from coming back<\/h2>\n<p>Adjust sprinkler heads so they stop watering the driveway \u2014 the stain returns exactly as fast as the water keeps arriving. A rust-preventing additive or a filtration fix on heavily ferrous wells addresses the source.<\/p>\n<p>Sealing the slab after cleaning slows re-staining substantially, because the iron deposits onto the sealer instead of into the pores.
