Regular <a href=\"\/gutter-cleaning\/\">gutter clearing<\/a> is fundamentally rot prevention that happens to also keep water off your head at the front door.<\/p>\n<h2>The mechanics of the damage<\/h2>\n<p>When a gutter blocks, water backs up until it finds an exit. One exit is over the front edge \u2014 visible, annoying, mostly harmless. The other is backward, under the drip edge and against the fascia, soffit and lower roof deck. That one is invisible and destructive.<\/p>\n<p>Wood that gets wet and dries survives; wood held damp rots. A blocked gutter holds a wet sponge of debris directly against the fascia for weeks at a time, which is exactly the sustained damp that rot fungi need.<\/p>\n<h2>What it looks like when it has gone wrong<\/h2>\n<p>Peeling paint on the fascia is the early sign. Soft spots, dark staining, and gutter fixings pulling loose \u2014 the screws have nothing solid to grip \u2014 come next. Inside the attic, water staining at the eaves tells the same story.<\/p>\n<p>By the time a gutter is visibly sagging, the fascia behind it is usually part of the problem. Replacement means carpentry, painting and re-hanging the gutter run: many times the cost of the clearings that would have prevented it.<\/p>\n<h2>The compounding problems<\/h2>\n<p>Overflow also lands at the foundation in a concentrated line, and winter turns trapped gutter water into ice dams that force meltwater up under shingles. Mosquitoes breed in standing gutter water all summer.<\/p>\n<p>None of this is dramatic on any given day, which is why it gets ignored.
