For a house under heavy tree cover, that converts an overflowing-every-autumn problem into a manageable one, and that is real value.

They also keep birds and rodents from nesting in the runs, and they make each eventual cleaning faster because what does accumulate is finer and lighter.

What they cannot do

Fine material goes through or over every guard design: shingle granules, pollen mats, seed fluff, the silt that arrives with rain. It accumulates underneath as a slow sediment that eventually restricts flow — invisibly, because the guard hides it.

Guards themselves also load up: pine needles lie across mesh, maple seeds helicopter into slots, and a matted guard surface sheds water straight over the edge in heavy rain, which reproduces the original problem with extra steps.

The honest arithmetic

Heavy tree cover: guards are usually worth it — fewer cleanings, less overflow drama, better winters. Open lots with little debris: they solve a problem you barely have.

Either way, budget for periodic inspection and cleaning of the guarded system. Less often, yes. Never, no.

Guards or not, if water is coming over the edge, something is blocked.
