Timing is the difference between <a href=\"\/deck-staining-sealing\/\">deck staining and sealing<\/a> that lasts three years and a finish that peels in one.<\/p>\n<h2>The weather window<\/h2>\n<p>Stain wants moderate temperatures and a dry stretch: dry days before application so the wood&#8217;s moisture content is low, and dry days after so the coating cures before rain tests it. In Missouri that reliably means late spring \u2014 after the wet season eases \u2014 and early autumn, before temperatures drop.<\/p>\n<p>High summer fails on both ends: stain applied to sun-hot boards flashes off before it penetrates, laying a weak film that wears fast. Direct afternoon sun on application day is its own enemy \u2014 morning work and shade-chasing are standard practice.<\/p>\n<h2>Why the wood must be dry through<\/h2>\n<p>Stain bonds by penetrating. Water already in the wood blocks that penetration and, worse, gets sealed in \u2014 moisture trapped under a coating pushes it off from beneath as it tries to escape, which is the peeling you see on failed decks.<\/p>\n<p>Dry to the touch is not dry through. After cleaning, give the deck roughly forty-eight hours of dry weather, longer in humid spells. The wait is the cheapest part of the job and the most commonly skipped.<\/p>\n<h2>Reading whether it is time<\/h2>\n<p>The water test settles it: sprinkle water on the boards. Beading means the old coating is still working; soaking in means the wood is unprotected and ready for renewal.<\/p>\n<p>Most horizontal surfaces want recoating every two to three years \u2014 sooner in full sun. Rails and verticals last longer.
