This is the corner of dock cleaning where the argument is not appearance — it is that somebody is going to go down.

Why docks grow the worst algae

Permanent moisture from below, splash from every side, and shade lines from rails and boat covers: a dock is an algae habitat that happens to be a walkway. Growth concentrates exactly where feet land — the shaded board ends, the ramp, the steps off the bank.

And the people crossing it are barefoot or in wet shoes, hands full of gear, watching the boat rather than the boards.

Cleaning over water, carefully

Timber docks clean like any exterior wood — chemistry first, low-pressure rinse, no grain-tearing blast — with the added constraint that everything happens over the lake. Product choice and quantity discipline matter: what goes on the boards ends up below them, so this is measured application rather than liberal spraying, and on some surfaces a mechanical approach is the more responsible call.

Composite dock decking follows its manufacturer’s gentler rules, same as a composite deck at the house.

Traction that lasts

A cleaned dock is safe until the algae re-establishes — a season, more or less, depending on shade. Anti-slip additives in a sealer coat extend that meaningfully on the worst boards, and replacing the odd chronically shaded, chronically slick board sometimes beats fighting it.

Pair the dock with the boat and the season starts clean everywhere at once.

One slip pays for a lot of cleaning. Send photos of the dock and we will quote it — Wappapello, Clearwater and everywhere between are in range. Read more about dock cleaning →

Wet algae on timber is about as slick as surfaces get, and docks combine it with bare feet, carried loads and water on every side.
