The orange staining on your concrete is iron oxide — rust — and around here it usually arrives through the sprinklers. Well water across much of Southeast Missouri is iron-rich, and no amount of concrete and driveway cleaning pressure will move the stain it leaves. Chemistry will.
Where the rust comes from
Iron dissolved in well water is invisible until it oxidises. Every irrigation cycle deposits a little more onto the slab; over a season, the spray pattern of your sprinklers paints itself onto the driveway in orange.
Fertiliser is the other common source — many lawn products contain iron, and granules that land on concrete and get wet leave a constellation of small round stains. Metal furniture, planters and tools left on the slab do the same in outline form.
Why pressure fails and acid works
Rust is not sitting on the concrete; it has precipitated into the pore structure. Pressure washing removes surface material and leaves the colour, often brighter than before because the grime around it is gone.
Removal needs a chemical that converts the iron oxide into a soluble compound that rinses away — oxalic acid is the standard, applied, given dwell time, and rinsed. On most sprinkler staining the result is dramatic. Deep, old, repeatedly-recharged stains may need a second treatment, and honesty requires saying that some ghosting can remain on badly saturated slabs.
Keeping it from coming back
Adjust sprinkler heads so they stop watering the driveway — the stain returns exactly as fast as the water keeps arriving. A rust-preventing additive or a filtration fix on heavily ferrous wells addresses the source.
Sealing the slab after cleaning slows re-staining substantially, because the iron deposits onto the sealer instead of into the pores. If you are treating rust anyway, sealing directly afterwards is the efficient sequence.
