Pressure Washing

Soft wash vs. pressure wash: which does your house need?

Soft washing cleans with chemistry at roughly garden-hose pressure; pressure washing cleans with force. Your house needs the first one, your driveway needs the second, and knowing which is which is most of what separates a professional pressure washing in Southeast Missouri service from a rented machine.

What soft washing actually is

A soft wash applies a cleaning solution — typically a diluted sodium hypochlorite mix with a surfactant — to the surface and lets it kill the algae, mildew and mould growing there. After the solution has done its work, everything is rinsed at low pressure. Nothing is blasted off; the organism dies and lets go.

This matters because most of what makes a house look dirty is alive. Green film on siding, black streaks on gutters, mildew under eaves — these are colonies, not dirt. Force removes their visible surface and leaves the roots, which is why pressure-washed siding greens up again within months while a soft-washed wall stays clean far longer.

Where high pressure belongs

Concrete, brick pavers, stone and other hard mineral surfaces genuinely benefit from pressure. Embedded dirt in the pores of a driveway will not respond to chemistry alone, and the surface can take thousands of PSI without damage when the work is done with a surface cleaner rather than a wand.

The dividing line is simple: if the surface is mineral and underfoot, pressure is usually right. If it is siding, roofing, painted wood or anything that sheds water by design, chemistry is right and force is a liability.

What goes wrong when you swap them

Pressure on siding drives water up behind the laps and into the wall cavity, where it causes rot and mould you will not discover for a year. Pressure on shingles strips the granule layer and shortens the roof’s life. Pressure on painted wood lifts the coating.

Soft-wash chemistry on a driveway, meanwhile, simply underperforms — it kills the algae but leaves the embedded grime, so the slab looks better without looking clean. The wrong method is not a little worse. It is either damaging or ineffective, depending on the direction of the mistake.
