Headstone Cleaning

Why bleach is the worst thing for a grave marker

Bleach makes a headstone whiter for a season and weaker forever — the salts it leaves inside the stone crystallise and break the surface apart from within. It is the most common well-intentioned damage in any cemetery, and the reason proper headstone cleaning uses conservation chemistry instead.

What bleach does inside stone

Marble and limestone are porous; liquid soaks in. Bleach carries chlorides that remain in the pore network after the water evaporates, and those salts then cycle with humidity — dissolving, recrystallising, expanding. The growing crystals exert pressure inside the stone’s surface layer.

The result is spalling and sugaring: the face of the stone, inscription included, crumbling away grain by grain over the years that follow. The damage arrives long after the bleaching, which is why the cause so rarely gets the blame.

The rest of the harmful toolkit

Vinegar and acidic cleaners dissolve marble and limestone directly — the stones are calcium carbonate, the same mineral acid descales from a kettle. Wire brushes and abrasive pads scour the surface and soften inscription edges. Pressure washing erodes weathered stone wholesale.

Household products in general have no place on historic stone: they were formulated for surfaces that can be replaced.

What conservators use instead

Non-ionic biological cleaners — D/2 Biological Solution is the standard specified by the National Park Service and used on national cemetery markers — kill the growth without leaving harmful salts, then let weather finish the job gently.

The whiteness arrives slowly, over months, and the stone is unharmed. Slow and safe beats instant and destructive on an object whose entire purpose is to last.
