Wash a car with well water and let it air dry, and the paint keeps the minerals — spots that start as residue and, left in the sun, etch into the clearcoat. In a region running on wells, drying technique is half of mobile car washing.
From spot to etch
Each drying droplet concentrates its dissolved minerals into a ring. Fresh deposits sit on the clearcoat and wipe off; baked under sun through repeated cycles, they bond, and eventually they etch — a crater in the clearcoat that remains after the mineral is gone.
Sprinkler overspray is the sneaky repeat offender: a car parked in the arc gets misted and sun-dried daily, which is the etching recipe run on a timer.
The stages and their fixes
Fresh spots: proper wash and hand dry. Bonded mineral: dedicated water-spot removers — mild acids that dissolve the deposit — or clay treatment. Etched clearcoat: polishing to level the surface, which is paint-correction work, not washing.
The stage determines the bill, which is the argument for never letting spots winter on the paint.
Prevention that actually works
Never let water air dry on the car: hand drying with microfibre removes the minerals with the water. We bring our own wash water, which sidesteps whatever is in your well, and a wax or sealant layer keeps deposits sitting on the protection instead of the clearcoat.
And move the car out of the sprinkler arc — the cheapest paint protection in Missouri.
